Cusco & Machu Picchu
The legend tells that Manco Cápac, the first sovereign of the Inca, founded the city of Qosqo in the 12th century, on the outskirts of what is now the Plaza de Armas after a revelation of the Inti, the Sun God. This place became the centre of the Kingdom of Cusco, which then expanded forming the Tawantinsuyo, the largest pre-Columbian empire of America. The city thus became the administrative, political and military center of a territory extending from the south of Colombia to the center of Chile.
The road between Cusco and Machu Picchu is one of the busiest in South America. The paths between one point and the other, however, are numerous and offer far more than you can expect: a Sacred Valley, Inca ruins, colonial cities, markets and imposing mountains.
